Giulia Trauzzi

Victoria University of Wellington - Te Herenga Waka, PhD Student

Giulia achieved her Bsc in Biological Sciences from one of the top universities in Europe for research and education (Università La Sapienza di Roma).

Then, she specialised her studies in Marine Biology at the Università Politecnica delle Marche, where she achieved her master’s degree with top marks. Both her projects were focused on evolutionary biology and genetics: phylogenetics analysis of Mexican lizards (BSc) and a genetic study based on ancient DNA of S. trutta complex in the Mediterrenean area during the Younger Dryas event (MSc).

After her graduation, Giulia joined the fish evolutionary biology team at the University of Bristol (UK), where she worked both on African cichlids speciation and on building a reference library for fishes from the British Isles.

Giulia Trauzzi’s PhD is not formally part of the Moana Project, but rather is funded by Seafood Innovations Limited. However, Giulia hopes to use the high-resolution model developed for Kaikoura by the Moana Project to study pāua larval movement in the area, illustrating how such models can be used in fisheries research and management.
