Dr Julie Jakoboski

MetOcean Solutions, Te Tiro Moana Team Lead

Dr Julie Jakoboski is an oceanographer at MetOcean based in Raglan where her focus is on obtaining ocean observations for Aotearoa, NZ’s public use and assimilation into ocean models with the Te Tiro Moana team of the Moana Project.

Julie gained her PhD in August 2019 from the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Physical Oceanography where she studied ocean circulation around the Galápagos Archipelago using autonomous underwater vehicles (Spray gliders).  And previously, Julie worked at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory – working on a number of instruments from projects that measured winds over the ocean to the composition of the atmosphere of Jupiter.

As lead of Te Tiro Moana, Julie is directing the deployment of the Mangopare sensors, and will assimilate the data from Aotearoa’s moana to better inform the public on changing ocean temperatures. Bringing her skills in observational oceanography data and ocean models, Julie will guide the Moana Projects data component to better our current ocean measurements.
